Evidence Based Practice (EBP)

Six Steps to EBP

DUKE University outlined six steps to applying Evidence-based Practice:

1. ASSESS the patient

Start with the patient -- a clinical problem or question arises from the care of the patient

2. ASK the question

Construct a well-built clinical question. See PICO

3. ACQUIRE the evidence

Select the appropriate resource(s) and conduct a search. See LEVELS OF EVIDENCE

4. APPRAISE the evidence

Appraise that evidence for its validity and applicability

5. APPLY

Integrate that evidence with clinical expertise, patient preferences and apply it to practice

6. SELF-EVALUATION

Evaluate your performance with this patient
