Fair Use and Copyright Law

Copyright law contains some exceptions that allow the use of copyrighted materials for educational purposes. These provisions include the Fair Use Doctrine, section 107, which outlines four areas of consideration that may allow for copyrighted works to be used without a license:

The four fair use factors:

1. The purpose and character of the use, whether of a commercial nature or for nonprofit educational purposes

2. The nature of the copyrighted work

3. The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole
